CHRISTMAS DAY/ MUSIC

The music of Brazil is an old reflection of the cultural diversity of this country, with African, indigenous, Portuguese and other European influences. Samba and bossa nova are the best known genres. Even so, there are several paradigmatic genres that identify Brazilian music.Like all expressions of Brazilian culture, the music of Brazil is a mixture of very diverse influences, gestating throughout its history a great variety of regional rhythms.

Musical traditions from Europe, African rhythms and indigenous styles have hybridized since colonial times to form a unique soundscape in the world. It is made up of two currents: a written and scholarly tradition, with European roots, and an unwritten, popular one, the product of acculturation between European, African and indigenous music.

Genuine fusions between different styles and genres have become the melting pot of Brazilian rhythms that coexist today, with samba and bossa nova as national standards. The set of typical Brazilian rhythms is known as Brazilian Popular Music or MPB. But at Christmas the houses of Brazil are filled with Christmas carols, the most popular Brazilian song being 'Então é Natal'.
