GAMES AND TRADITIONS IN BRAZIL

 flower offering

A curious way in which Christmas is celebrated in Brazil is with the traditional offering of flowers for Yemanjá. This celebration came to Brazil centuries ago with the arrival of slaves who professed the Yoruba religion. Primarily, it takes place in Copacabana and in the city of Rio de Janeiro, but it has been gaining strength in the rest of the country. During this celebration, flowers are thrown over the sea to thank Yamanjá, the goddess of the sea, and wishes are made for the coming year.

folklore with which Christmas is celebrated in Brazil

Being a country full of culture and art, one way in which Christmas is celebrated in Brazil is by enjoying different folkloric plays. One of the classic works that cannot be missing among Brazilian Christmas traditions is the work of "Las Pastoras y el Gitano." This is a fun and very different take on what you might imagine a Christmas play to be.

During this presentation, an attempt is made to recreate the history of the shepherds, only this time they are shepherds, that is, women. These shepherdesses are the ones who come to visit the newborn, but they run into a malevolent gypsy who is trying to kidnap the Child God! It is definitely something very curious and fun about Brazil.

San Silvestre race

One of the Brazilian Christmas traditions takes place at the end of the month, exactly on December 31. This is the San Silvestre race that takes place in the city of Sao Paulo, in which millions of people gather around the world as a way to say goodbye to the year. This race has been held since 1935 and is held in honor of Saint San Silvestre. Although it began as only for people who lived in Brazil, today it is a very popular event that attracts many foreigners.
