FUN FCATS IN BRAZIL

Christmas Eve is celebrated calmly and with lots of food. It is customary to spend these holidays with the family, so Brazilians gather at home to enjoy a delicious Christmas dinner. After dinner, there is the famous gift exchange. For this, Brazilians play the secret friend, as in other parts of the world. But something curious is that during the days prior to the delivery of gifts, they usually exchange letters with secret friends, giving them clues about who they are and what the gift will be.

On the other hand, the most religious families tend to go to midnight mass, which generally begins at midnight and ends around one in the morning. It is said that this mass receives that name, since roosters are the animal that announces the beginning of a new day, only this time it announces that Christmas has finally arrived on Brazilian lands. After this date, in Brazil people take the opportunity to rest and stay at home, although there are those who prefer to take their day off on the beach and the sea.

Many communities put on a Christmas play called Os Pastores, or "The Shepherds." The play tells the story of Christmas but with an unexpected twist: usually there is a shepherdess who tries to steal baby Jesus when he visits him. On Christmas Eve, many cities and towns host fireworks displays. People often gather in the streets to watch. Sometimes choral performances precede or follow the fireworks display.
